Lyme's Disease
Lyme's disease is caused by the Borrelia Burgdorferi spirochete and is transmitted through the bite of a tick. The best preventive measures are thus the avoidance of tick bites through the wear of protective clothing end the use of insect repellants. It is a good idea to actively look for ticks on your body. Any ticks present should be removed as soon as possible, preferably within the 24 hours after the bite, using an adequate tick removing instrument.
It should also be noted that ticks can carry pathogens other than Borrelia Burgdorferi as well.
Venal Thrombosis in long air travel
If you are traveling longer than 12 hours and most of that time you are forced to sit down on some airline chair you run a little risk of suffering venal thrombosis. Mind you the risk of this happening to a normal healthy person is minimal. Persons with a high risk for thrombosis however ( for instance people who already had a previous thrombosis, people who just had surgery, people who were in a traumatic accident) will need to take special measures: they have to move their legs often, wear loose clothing, drink a lot of water and avoid alcohol and sedation drugs. Sometimes the wear of elastic socks (up to the knee) is advisable. The taking of aspirin in order to prevent venal thrombosis during travel is not advisable though.
